In the ever-evolving world of the automotive aftermarket industry, staying ahead of the competition requires efficient data management and seamless communication. Enter the ACES format, a game-changing standard that can help you streamline your operations and expand your business. But what exactly is the ACES format, and why should it matter to your business?
As a data management agency, we’re here to guide you through the ins and outs of the ACES format and show you how it can help your business grow. Let’s dive into the essentials.
Understanding the ACES Format
The ACES format, short for Aftermarket Catalog Exchange Standard, is a standardized data format used by the automotive aftermarket industry to communicate vehicle fitment information efficiently. It was developed by the Auto Care Association to provide a common language for exchanging information about which parts and accessories fit which vehicles.
ACES files are XML-based and contain detailed fitment information, including year, make, model and other vehicle attributes. This format ensures the right parts are matched with the right vehicles, reducing errors and improving customer satisfaction. The current version is ACES 5.0, released in March 2026.
What’s Inside an ACES File?
At its core, an ACES file is a list of applications. Each application connects one of your part numbers to a vehicle. A typical application includes:
- Part number and part type: Your part number plus a standardized part type from the Product Classification Database (PCdb).
- Base vehicle: The year, make and model, coded from the Vehicle Configuration Database (VCdb).
- Vehicle details: Things like submodel, engine, transmission or drive type when they affect fitment.
- Qualifiers and notes: Standardized statements from the Qualifier Database (Qdb), such as “with 4-wheel ABS.”
- Position and quantity: Where the part goes on the vehicle and how many are needed.
Because everything is coded from the same reference databases, your distributors and retailers can read your file and know exactly what you mean, without anyone retyping or guessing.
What’s New in ACES 5.0
The Auto Care Association released ACES 5.0 in March 2026 after a yearlong industry review, along with a new VCdb 2.0 and Qdb 2.0. The new version lets you communicate:
- Vehicle-specific digital assets: Images and documents (other than diagrams) can now be tied to a specific vehicle and part number in the application itself.
- Multiple asset descriptions: A single digital asset can carry more than one description.
- Multilingual manufacturer labels: The MfrLabel field now supports multiple languages, which is a big help for selling across the Americas.
ACES 4.2 is still supported as the previous version, so there’s time to plan your move. Just check with your trading partners to see when they’ll be ready for 5.0.
Why the ACES Format Matters
For an automotive aftermarket manufacturer, the ACES format is more than just a data standard. It’s a strategic tool for business growth. Here’s why:
- Accuracy and Consistency: By adopting the ACES format, you make sure your product data is accurate and consistent across all platforms. This reduces errors, improves inventory management and builds customer trust.
- Improved Communication: The ACES format makes it easier to work with your trading partners, including distributors and retailers. When everyone speaks the same data language, your supply chain runs smoother.
- Enhanced Customer Experience: Accurate data means customers can easily find the right parts for their vehicles. That leads to higher satisfaction, fewer returns and more loyalty.
- Compliance and Integration: Many major retailers and distributors require ACES data. Adopting the standard keeps you compliant and opens the door to new business opportunities.
Faster Access to Reference Data
ACES depends on the Auto Care Association’s reference databases, and getting them has gotten easier. Since January 2025, subscribers can use an API to pull the VCdb, Qdb, PCdb and Brand Table in JSON format as often as daily. Manual downloads are still available on AutoCareVIP.com and are published monthly. Either way, staying current with these databases is what keeps your fitment data accurate.
